Virginia Estate

Virginia Estate is a small residential estate situated in Oaktree on the eastern outskirts of Middleton St George, the sub settlement of Oaktree principally consists of 2 estates, Virginia Estate and Oak Tree Estate and a historic farmstead based around the Oak tree pub and the recently refurbished Oak Tree farm cottages on Yarm Road, near the site of the former Oak Tree railway junction.

The houses on Virginia Estate were built by the Ministry of Defence around 1947 to house the families of RAF personnel based at RAF Middleton St. George. At the end of the war, the airport was taken over by the RAF, and there was a subsequent need for permanent accommodation for the families of service personnel.

Virginia Estate was originally built to house the families of enlisted service men whilst the nearby Oak Tree Estate housed the families of officers.

Since 1983 the houses have been privately owned but the estate has remained un-adopted by the local borough council. The common land, footpaths, roads and surface water drains are maintained and managed by Middle Oak Management Ltd. Virginia estate has wide grass verges and plenty of green spaces.it has the benefit of a rural setting without the isolation. Every home has a small sized front garden 3-8metres in depth and a larger rear garden.

Origins

The land registry maps shows the layout of Virginia Estate and surrounding areas. As you can see from the map the original names of the roads were First Second and Third Avenues which later became: Washington Avenue, Fairfax Road, Alexandria Drive and homes on Denver Drive and The Spinney were added later.

The houses are primarily semi-detached although The Spinney has several larger detached homes and Denver Drive has four bungalows. Each house is allocated one share in the company and at each house sale a stock transfer form is completed by the seller and the buyer to authorise the transfer of the share and a new share certificate is issued.

To the skies

Teesside Airport

Originally Royal Air Force (RAF) the aerodrome became Tees-Side Airport in 1964, Teesside International Airport in 1987 and Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004 before reverting to Teesside International Airport in 2019 following a poll indicating 93% of locals preferred the name, with the change occurring on 25th July 2019.

RAF Middleton St George

The aerodrome began life in January 1941 as Royal Air Force Station Middleton St George or RAF Goosepool as known to the locals (though it has never officially held that name). It was the most northerly of all Bomber Command airfields, home to both RAF and Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons during WWII and exclusively RAF post war. Bombing missions from the station included those to Berlin, Hanover, Kassel Mannheim and Munich. Of the many military aircraft based at the aerodrome, it is best known as home to the Avro Lancaster during the war and English Electric Lightning in the 1960’s.

In 1957 the runway was extended to its current length of 7,516ft. The RAF station was closed in 1964 and the airfield sold to the Ministry of Civil Aviation
